Finally, our first female contestant! Beth, a sales representative, reached the hot seat via this fastest finger question:
A. Purdue | B. Ohio State
C. Northwestern | D. Penn State
| Correct Order (drag the mouse over the letters): C-A-B-D
| Beth's winning time: 6.52 Competitors: 4/9 |
Let's see if Beth can be the first female to win a million on the show!
1. According to the popular 1950's TV theme song, what was Davy Crockett the king of? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. England | B. Wild Frontier

| Beth picks B... Yes, that's her final answer. And it's right! $100. |
2. If you wanted to make an igloo, which of the following materials would you traditionally use? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Cement | B. Flour
| C. Snow | D. Eskimo Pies
| Beth chooses C... And that's her final answer. It's a good one; it's worth $200! |
3. What is your power source if you use solar energy? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Sun | B. Propane
| C. Water | D. Energizer Bunny

6. What culinary dish is still raw, even once it's prepared? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Steak Tartare | B. Beef Wellington
| C. London Broil | D. Hungarian goulash
| Beth quickly picks A... For her final answer. Nailed it! $2000! LOOGAROO LAMENTS: I'm embarrassed to say it, but I'd have gone bye-bye on this one. I thought it was D. |
7. What city plays host every year to the Miss America pageant? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Orlando | B. Las Vegas
| C. Los Angeles | D. Atlantic City
| Beth is quick on the trigger once more. She selects D... And that's her final answer. Right again for $4000! |
8. Fictional rocker Chris Gaines is the alter ego of what country star? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Dwight Yoakam | B. Garth Brooks
| C. Clint Black | D. Billy Ray Cyrus
| Beth chooses B... Which is her final answer. She's on a roll, folks! $8000! |
9. At which of the following times would a nocturnal animal most likely sleep? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. 12:30 PM | B. 1:30 AM
| C. 3:30 AM | D. 12:30 AM
| Beth knows that a nocturnal animal is one that is awake at night, and thus sleeps in the day. Using that logic, she settles with 12:30 PM... Yes, that's her final answer. And she's got another right answer! $16,000! LOOGAROO LAMENTS: Even if you didn't know what nocturnal means, you might have been able to get this answer without a Lifeline. Answers B, C, and D are only 3 hours apart, while A is no less than 9 hours away from any other choice. It's so far out in left field it has to be right. Although I could understand why the choices were what they were; a choice made for the evening might have stirred up another protest. |
10. According to Abbott and Costello's classic comedy routine 'Who's on First?', who plays third base? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Why | B. What
| C. Who Cares | D. I Don't Know
| Not familiar with the comedy bit, she'll throw this one to the always-ready audience. A. Why - 5% | B. What - 14% | ![]() ![]() ![]() C. Who Cares - 14% | D. I Don't Know - 67%
| Let's hope that the 67% saying I Don't Know aren't really saying they don't know. The majority of people saying D is enough to convince Beth. She'll go with D... And that will be her final answer.
So far, the leading female winner is Ginny Horvath.
She took home $32,000.
And now she's got company!

11. Which of the following people was born in the 20th century? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. Ernest Hemingway | B. Babe Ruth
| C. Mother Teresa | D. Charlie Chaplin
| Beth looks stumped. She'll try the 50:50 and see where that leads her. A. Ernest Hemingway | OUT | ![]() ![]() ![]() C. Mother Teresa | OUT
| Beth is wasting no time on anything. When she knows the answer, she says it immediately. When she doesn't know it, she immediately whips out a Lifeline. Now she's going to use her Phone-a-Friend to call her father, John. Beth's mother picks up the phone. (Something tells me she was a correspondent, too.) After a cute little interchange, John comes on the line. Here's the transcript, post-formalities:
Beth: "You have about 15 seconds left, Dad." John: "Go with B." Beth: "Mother Teresa?" John: "Yeah." Beth: "Was born in the 20th century." John: "Yes." Beth: "Sure?" (Long pause) "Hello?" John: "20th century would be 1900's?" Beth: "Yes." John: "I'll still go with-" (Burp burp) ![]() ![]() ![]() Beth got enough encouragement to trust her father. With nothing to lose, she chooses C... For her final answer.
If she gets this right, she'll be Millionaire's richest woman.
She burned two Lifelines to arrive at C.
And she's also arrived at the RIGHT ANSWER!
![]() LOOGAROO LAMENTS: I knew it was C as soon as the 50:50 was used. One of the little-known obscure trivial facts I know is that Hemingway drove an ambulance during World War I. Had he have been born in the 20th century, the oldest he could have been during that time is 17 years old. Kinda young to enlist, ain't it?
Another thing I should mention right here is Beth's speed at making decisions. Remember Doug Foster? He won $32,000 as the next-to-last contestant of the August run. He also spent 15 minutes (later edited down to 6) pondering the $32K question. The point? Time is your ally. There is no clock to race against. Hence, if you're hung up on a question, TAKE YOUR TIME. See if you can't knock off a couple answers on your own. Or try using logic or outside facts to help you out. Don't kill off a Lifeline unless you're totally stuck. |
With that correct answer, Beth passes Ginny Horvath as the highest-scoring female on the show. Let's see if she can't set that bar even higher with the next question: |
12. John Steinbeck's non-fiction work 'Travels with Charley' describes a cross-country trip with whom? | ![]() ![]() ![]() A. His oldest son | B. His pet poodle
| C. His younger brother | D. His young colt
| Beth sure is decisive, isn't she? After no more than 10 seconds of thinking, she decides to bolt.
Given a guess, Beth would've chosen C...
LOOGAROO LAMENTS: A lesson in gag answers. If an answer appears in the lower tier that sounds really strange, it's probably wrong. If an answer appears in the upper tier that sounds really strange, it's probably right. Why? Because if it were so obviously wrong, the writers wouldn't have put it in. If the answer to this question wasn't an animal, they wouldn't have used them as choices. I might have picked B, on this logic and the fact that I don't remember Steinbeck owning a horse. Of course, let's not forget that I blew the $2000 question, so I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near this far. |
The following space is blank - don't worry about it.
