For $100:
1. What is the name for the calm area at the center of a hurricane?

LOOGAROO LAMENTS: Norman Payne, the sequel. If Norman couldn't do it, I thought this guy might. Again, saving his Lifelines for as long as possible. As for me, I'd have done the same thing.

For $2000:
6. Kerri Strug earned a team Olympic gold medal in 1996 despite injuring her ankle in what event?

Reege: "It must have been a long time since you've played with them!"
David: "It is! And really, I should pull 'em out more often!"

After that cute little interchange, David selects C...

which is his final answer.

He may not play with them much, but he's right again!

For $8000:
8. Who was the lead singer of the Commodores?

A. Lionel RichieB. Lou Rawls
C. David RuffinD. Barry White

David, quite the music buff as he says, goes with Lionel Richie...

Yes, that's his final answer.

Once again, he's doubled his money!

For $16,000:
9. Katherine Graham is the former publisher of what daily newspaper?

A. New York TimesB. Los Angeles Times
C. USA TodayD. Washington Post

David, surprisingly confident about this one, says it's D...

and confirms that's his final answer.

And this guy is on fire!

LOOGAROO LAMENTS: I'd have had to Ask the Audience on this one.

For a guaranteed $32,000:
10. What's the term for a wicker basket used to carry a newly caught fish?

A. CreelB. Purse
C. Straw BoxD. Hip Box

Like Norman before him, David is noticably perplexed. He does have all three Lifelines, and he decides to use the 50:50.

A. CreelOUT

OUTD. Hip Box

David begins to side towards Creel, but isn't sure enough to risk 15 grand on it. He decides to consult the audience.

A. Creel - 66%0%

2%D. Hip Box - 32%

Even though the audience favors Creel, David fears that's because HE led THEM to the answer, rather than vice versa - which is what that Lifeline is there for.

David: "...who picked C?!"
Reege: "We'll deal with that LATER!! I'm on the edge of my seat and you want to know who picked C!"

Reluctantly, he decides to burn his final Lifeline - Phone-a-Friend - to contact his father-in-law, Ed. The transcript, post question:

Ed: "I would say that I don't really know. I would think a Hip Box is what my personal guess would be."
David: "Do you know what a Creel is?"
    Ed: "A Creel... No, I don't."
    David: "Wow..."
Ed: "And I don't know what the two is, either, whether it's a Hip Box or a Creel." (Time's Up)

Now David is really distraught. All three Lifelines gone, each of which leading him up two different roads. He begins to go for his gut reaction....

Or maybe not...

Finally, he bites the bullet. He decides on a Creel...

And, sighing, he declares that's his final answer.

Regis: "Your father-in-law said a Hip Box..."
David: "He did."
Regis: "And you didn't listen to him."
David: "I didn't."

Regis: "You were RIGHT! It's a Creel!! $32,000!!!"

LOOGAROO LAMENTS: $15,000, gone. That's what would have happened to me. Even without the Lifelines, I thought it was a Hip Box.

END SHOW 3 -- BEGIN SHOW 4

David mentions that once he's through with the show, his first task is to convince his that the money is theirs, not just his. Regis commends David's selflessness, and that of his wife.

For $64,000:
11. Which of the following Great Lakes is the largest in area?

A. Lake HuronB. Lake Michigan
C. Lake OntarioD. Lake Erie

David thought this was going to be a breeze... until they left Lake Superior off the list.

Recalling lists that had Huron above Michigan, he decides on A...

And says that's his final answer.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the answer they were looking for. The right answer was B. Lake Michigan.

BUT WAIT... It appears that the wrong answer was programmed. Lake Michigan is the largest of the four choices in terms of VOLUME, but when it came to area, Lake Huron - David's choice - was the right one. So, they're giving him credit for the answer!! Plus, he will return on the final show to continue his quest for $1,000,000!

LOOGAROO LAMENTS: Contrary to popular belief, the writers didn't goof up because of poor phrasing of the question, but a momentary slip of memory. The person who had programmed the right answer into the computer forgot that Michigan had the largest volume and not the largest area (which would have been used as a rationale had the contestant been snagged). Anyway, goof up or no goof up, I'd have definitely been toast on this one: I thought it was Lake Ontario!!

WINNINGS TO DATE: $81,000, at least.
